My first blog entry for this year's Hawaii trip.  Sitting at the airport in Pittsburgh waiting for our flight to Houston.  The flight has been delayed 30 minutes, which means we will be very close in catching in flight to Honolulu. Let the adventure begin!

Arrived in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

We are finally here!  After three plane changes and 20 hours of travel Simone and I are safely in our condo.   Our first flight from Pittsburgh to Houston, TX was delayed from 0550 until 0630.  After boarding and de-ice we were wheels-up around 0700.  The flight had only one interesting moment; when we were […]

Happy New Year from Kailua-Kona

This was the last sunset of 2010.  It is the end of the first decade of the 21st century. Simone and I enjoyed the view from Bubba Gump Shrimp Company in downtown Kailua-Kona.  Our waitress, Merav. was fantastic.  She was very friendly and we were able to talk SCUBA between order of garlic bread, shrimp […]

We were so jet-lagged that Eric and I slept in until 9 AM (we went to bed around 11:30 PM, but I woke up around 5 AM for about an hour due to jet lag).  Then we ate our ritual first breakfast at the condo on the lanai while we watched the waves.  What is […]

Circle of Fire–Flight around Kilauea

Simone and I toured the volcano with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. We left Kona around 0930 to make sure we had enough time to eat at Ken’s House of Pancake’s before our 1315 check in at the Hilo International Airport (ITO). We drove the (Ala Muana) Saddle Road, Route 200,  and saved a some time but […]

Drive Around the Crater

After the flight around the volcano it was our turn to drive up to Volcano National Park and the Jaggar Observatory. We got there just before dusk and set up to view the sunset.   We got some great pictures of the vent and a surprise rainbow that appeared to grow out of the volcano. Here […]
